The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is experiencing significantly elevated flows this week, driven by increased Prineville Reservoir releases amid above-average snowpack runoff. At 1,170 CFS — roughly four to five times the typical late-May base flow of 200–300 CFS — the river is running high, off-color, and extremely difficult to fish safely. We recommend holding off on this stretch until flows drop back into the 200–400 CFS range.

The Crooked was fishing exceptionally well through mid-May. The Mother's Day Caddis hatch was in full swing as recently as May 15, with Confluence Fly Shop reporting fish actively feeding on caddis adults and emergers. Flows had been gradually rising from ~190 CFS in mid-April to ~250 CFS by early May — normal seasonal progression. The current spike appears to be linked to accelerated reservoir management ahead of summer irrigation demand. Check the USGS gauge daily — this fishery can recover quickly once releases are reduced. A drop back to 300–500 CFS would make this river very fishable.

⚠️ Safety & Wading Advisory
- Do not wade at 1,170 CFS. This flow is flood-level for this tailwater — the river will be bank-full and fast throughout. Even experienced waders are at serious risk.
- Slick basalt: The Crooked's volcanic rock is treacherous even at low flows. With debris in the current, footing is extremely hazardous.
- Monitor USGS Gauge 14087400 at waterdata.usgs.gov daily. Fishing resumes once flows drop below ~500 CFS; optimal conditions begin below 300 CFS.
