🌊 Current Conditions

The Lower Deschutes is running at 3,940 CFS (USGS Gauge #14103000, Moody) as of this morning — elevated above median flows for mid-May, driven by ongoing snowmelt from the upper basin. Water clarity is slightly off-color in the main channel, but soft bank edges, inside seams, and shaded canyon walls are holding fishable clarity. Water temperature is a prime 58.8°F (14.9°C) — absolutely ideal for aggressive surface feeding and the big hatches now underway.

Despite the elevated flows, conditions are firmly GOOD. The river is wading carefully, so stick to known access points and be conservative in the heavier currents, especially near Sherars Falls. Drift boats have the advantage today.

🦟 What's Hatching

This is the report you've been waiting for all year: the Salmonfly hatch is at full peak from Trout Creek through Maupin, with the hatch front pushing upstream toward Warm Springs. Redside rainbows are actively crushing big stonefly dries slammed tight to the banks under overhanging trees and rocky canyon walls. If you've never witnessed the Salmonfly hatch on the Deschutes, this week is your window — these massive prehistoric bugs bring even the biggest fish to the top.

• Salmonfly (Pteronarcys californica) — #4–6: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ PEAK. Late morning through mid-afternoon; fish the banks aggressively.
• Golden Stonefly (Hesperoperla pacifica) — #8–10: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Strong. Running simultaneously with the Salmonfly; excellent backup pattern all day.
• Tan Caddis (Hydropsychidae) — #14–16: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Heavy afternoon and evening flights. Adds a productive second act after the stonefly bite cools.
• Yellow Sally — #14–16: ⭐⭐⭐ Active mid-afternoon. Don't overlook this in the riffles.
• Blue-Winged Olive — #18–22: ⭐⭐ Moderate during overcast windows, especially morning.

🎣 Top Fly Recommendations

• Chubby Chernobyl #6–8 — The undisputed king of Salmonfly season. Cast tight to the bank, let it drift, hold on. This is the pattern.
• Stimulator #6–8 (orange/red body) — Classic Salmonfly imitation that's been hammering fish in this canyon for decades. High-float, visible, and deadly.
• Elk Hair Caddis #14–16 (tan/orange) — Evening and late afternoon after the stonefly bite slows. Let it skitter across the seams.
• Parachute Adams #14–16 — All-purpose confidence fly when fish get picky between hatches; also covers Yellow Sally risers in the riffles.
• Pheasant Tail Nymph #14–16 — Drop it below a large stonefly indicator for subsurface action during mid-day lulls; fish are keying on drifting nymphs as much as the adults.
• Copper John #14–16 — Heavy nymph for the faster runs and pocket water; excellent on overcast days when surface activity slows.

📍 Best Access Points

• Harpham Flat (mile 50 above Maupin) — Excellent bank access, classic Salmonfly water with long gravel bars. One of the top spots on the river right now.
• Maupin City Park / Deschutes River Access (Hwy 197 bridge) — Easy wade access, good drift boat launch. Fish the canyon walls downstream.
• White River BLM Access (mile 43) — Productive bank fishing between White River confluence and Maupin; concentrate on inside seams.
• Above Sherars Falls — The canyon stretch above the falls holds big fish during the Salmonfly emergence. No boat passage through the falls; wade or float to just above.
• Below Sherars Falls — Macks Canyon area — More remote float/wade access, less pressure, excellent Salmonfly and Golden Stonefly water. Recommended for experienced anglers in a drift boat.

⚠️ Hazards & Closures

• Elevated flows (3,940 CFS): Wading is significantly more hazardous than normal. Use a wading staff, wear a belt on your waders, and do not attempt crossings at unfamiliar spots. Drift boats are the safest option in this flow range.
• Sherars Falls: No passage. Portage required on river right. Honor the Warm Springs Tribal fishing area.
• Rattlesnakes: Prime snake season in the canyon — watch your step on warm rock ledges and in tall grass near the bank.
• USFS/BLM Access: All lower Deschutes access points are open. Campfire restrictions may be in effect — check with BLM Prineville District before building fires.
• Tribal Lands: The stretch through the Warm Springs Reservation requires a tribal fishing permit. Purchase at Warm Springs before fishing that section.
