Redside rainbows are actively crushing big stonefly imitations slammed hard against the banks — expect explosive, heart-stopping takes.

The river is running at elevated springtime flows, so water clarity is slightly off-color in open runs. Focus your efforts on soft bank edges, inside seams, shaded canyon walls, and sheltered pockets where clarity improves and fish stack up to intercept drifting stoneflies. Don't ignore the slower inside corners — that's where the biggest fish are setting up.

• Chubby Chernobyl — #6 (Orange/Tan) — The undisputed king of Salmonfly season. Slam it tight against the bank, under willows, and along canyon walls. High-float foam means it handles chop and current — let it drag, skitter, and plop. Fish will chase it down.
• Stimulator — #6–8 (Orange/Yellow) — A perfect Salmonfly/Golden Stone imitation with excellent visibility in slightly off-color water. Run it as a solo fly or as the lead in a tandem dry-dropper rig.
• Elk Hair Caddis — #14–16 (Tan/Olive) — Essential for the afternoon caddis flights. Fish it in faster riffles and at the tailouts of runs when you see the evening caddis flurry begin.

• Maupin City Park / Boat Launch: Walk upstream or downstream along the canyon trail for prime bank coverage. Lots of Salmonfly activity in the willows.
• Beavertail Campground Area: Excellent drift boat pull-outs and wade access. Soft seams along both banks hold stacked fish right now.
• Sherars Falls: The falls itself is a natural fish congregation point. Below the falls, expect strong runs of redside rainbows plus Spring Chinook. ⚠️ Note: Spring Chinook season at Sherars Falls closes May 20 (TOMORROW) — get your Chinook fishing in today if that's on your list.
• South Junction (lower access): Catch the hatch front pushing downstream, with less angling pressure than the Maupin stretch.
