The lower Deschutes is fishing well as we roll into July, with flows at a solid 3,690 cfs (USGS gauge 14103000, Deschutes at Moody – as of 5:45 AM PDT) and water temperatures a prime 60°F for summer trout. Water clarity is excellent — crystal clear canyon water that demands careful approaches and light tippet, but rewards technical anglers with willing Redband rainbows.

🪲 What's Hatching

July on the Deschutes means one thing above all: caddis. Tan and brown caddis in sizes #14–20 are the show, with the best action rolling from 5 PM through dark. Evening seams and foam lines along the canyon walls are holding fish that are actively looking up. Mornings are producing with a solid Pale Morning Dun (PMD) hatch from roughly 10 AM to 1 PM — watch for subtle sippers in the slower tailouts and eddies. Blue Wing Olives are still showing in smaller numbers midday, and late Golden Stonefly stragglers may draw big fish up through early afternoon.

🪝 Top Fly Recommendations

Dry Flies (Evening Prime):

• Elk Hair Caddis (#14–18, tan/orange) — the go-to when fish start porpoising on caddis. Dead drift along seams, then skitter to trigger.
• Stimulator (#10–14, yellow/orange) — excellent attractor for canyon riffles and broken water; doubles as a Stonefly imitation for any stragglers showing.
• Chubby Chernobyl (#10–12) — high-vis foam hopper-style pattern that floats all day and keeps fish looking up between hatches. July marks the start of hopper season.
• Parachute Adams (#16–18) — the ultimate confidence fly during the PMD window and whenever you see general rising activity.

Sub-Surface (Morning & Midday):

• Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14–18) — dead-ringer for PMD nymphs drifting mid-column. Fish tight-line through any seam with 3–4 ft of depth.
• Copper John (#14–16, red or copper) — gets down fast in the deeper slots and attracts aggressive takes. Lead fly in any dropper rig.
• Zebra Midge (#18–22, black/red) — productive in slower morning tailouts before the main hatches fire.
• Woolly Bugger (#6–8, olive/black) — swing the deeper canyon runs for the big Redbands and any early-returning summer steelhead.

📍 Best Access Points

• Sandy Beach / Maupin City Park — easy walk-in access right in town; excellent caddis water in the evening riffles
• Harpham Flat (BLM) — prime run water above Sherars Falls; good wade access and camping
• Oak Springs Hatchery Area — productive morning PMD water; watch for no-fishing closures near the hatchery itself
• Macks Canyon (below Sherars Falls) — 21 miles below Maupin via BLM Rd 1700; the lower canyon road access — less pressure, bigger fish, excellent Woolly Bugger water for summer steelhead
• Colorado / Locked Gate — float-accessed or hike-in for serious dry fly seclusion

⚠️ Hazards & Notes

• Wind advisory: Sustained westerlies 20–30 mph today with gusts. Tight-line nymphing and euro techniques will outperform dry fly through midday. Canyon walls provide shelter in the evening — time your dry fly session accordingly.
• Sherars Falls: A Class IV-V rapid — mandatory portage for all watercraft. Do not attempt to run.
• Keep-out zone: No fishing within 400 ft below Sherars Falls (ODFW regulation).
• Heat: Carry extra water. July canyon temps can exceed 100°F by mid-afternoon.
