Lower Deschutes River โ€“ September 6, 2026

The lower Deschutes is firing on all cylinders this Sunday as Central Oregon anglers enter one of the most exciting months of the fishing calendar. September brings together two of fly fishing's great pleasures: the start of the wild steelhead run and the arrival of the Mahogany Dun hatch โ€” and right now, both are within reach in the Maupin corridor.

Current Conditions

Flow: 4,140 cfs (USGS Gauge 14103000 โ€“ Deschutes at Moody, as of early this morning). This is a healthy, fishable flow well within the normal fall range for the lower canyon. The river is running clear with excellent visibility and the gradient of the canyon stretching from above Sherars Falls down through Maupin is holding fish in all the classic lies โ€” the tail-outs, deep bucket edges, and foam seams behind midstream boulders.

Water Temperature: 60.4ยฐF (15.8ยฐC) โ€” right in the sweet spot. Trout are active throughout the day and steelhead are comfortable enough to take surface flies during low-light windows. No thermal stress concerns at this reading.

Clarity: Crystal clear. Classic late-summer Deschutes visibility. This means light tippet, careful wading, and proper presentation discipline reward anglers today.

Hatches & What's Working

September marks the official beginning of the Mahogany Dun (Paraleptophlebia) season on the lower Deschutes โ€” one of the most reliable and overlooked hatches of the year. Expect duns to begin emerging mid-morning through early afternoon, with spinner falls happening in the last hour of daylight. Match with a Parachute Adams in sizes 14โ€“16 or any mahogany-bodied comparadun.

October Caddis (Dicosmoecus) are just starting to make their presence known in the canyon โ€” early scouts are appearing in afternoons. Within the next two weeks this hatch will be a legitimate game-changer. Tie on a Stimulator or oversized Elk Hair Caddis (size 8โ€“10, orange body) now to get dialed in early.

The Chubby Chernobyl continues to be a go-to searching pattern through canyon runs, pulling both trout and the occasional aggressive steelhead to the surface. Run it on a dropper rig with a Pheasant Tail Nymph or Copper John (size 14โ€“16) trailing 18 inches behind for a deadly combo in pocket water.

For subsurface steelhead work, swing a Woolly Bugger in black or olive through the classic runs below Sherars Falls โ€” fish are staging and moving, and a swung fly during early morning low light can produce explosive grabs.

Best Access Points

  • Maupin City Park โ€“ Easy wade access, great run directly below the falls on the east bank. Popular but productive, especially early AM.
  • Harpham Flat โ€“ Excellent drift boat takeout and walk-in wade access to long, classic riffles. One of the best above-Sherars access points for resident redside trout.
  • Heritage Flats / Sandy Beach โ€“ Productive for trout through the mid-canyon; accessible from Hwy 197.
  • Beavertail Campground โ€“ Prime below-Sherars steelhead water. Swing through the long slot runs at first light.
  • Trout Creek โ€“ Lower canyon access, excellent steelhead holding water as fish push upriver.

Regulations & Hazards

Above Sherars Falls is fly fishing only with catch-and-release for trout. Below Sherars Falls, wild steelhead regulations apply โ€” check ODFW regs for current retention rules. Rattlesnakes are active in the warm canyon rocks โ€” watch where you step and sit. Air quality has been generally good in the canyon this week but keep an eye on regional smoke forecasts as nearby fire activity can shift conditions rapidly. Wading felt recommended at current flows. Drift boaters: the falls at Sherars require portage โ€” no exceptions.
