Deschutes River Fishing Report โ September 5, 2026
Lower Deschutes | Maupin Area | Above & Below Sherars Falls
Current Conditions Overview
September is the moment every Deschutes angler circles on the calendar, and this year is delivering. Native summer steelhead are moving through the lower canyon in strong numbers, resident redband trout are actively feeding on evening caddis, and the river is running at a healthy 4,110 cfs โ a near-ideal flow for wading and drift boating alike. Water temperature this morning hit 60ยฐF (15.3ยฐC), right in the sweet spot for active fish and comfortable handling during catch-and-release. Clarity is excellent with visibility well beyond 4 feet.
Flow & Water Conditions
- Flow: 4,110 cfs (USGS Gauge 14103000 โ Deschutes at Moody, as of 5:45 AM PDT)
- Water Temperature: 60ยฐF (15.3ยฐC)
- Clarity: Clear โ excellent visibility
Flows are running seasonally normal for early September. Both above and below Sherars Falls are very fishable. Drift boaters should run standard late-summer lines; waders will find plenty of accessible riffles and tailouts from Maupin downstream.
Hatches & Insect Activity
The caddis show is the highlight right now. Expect good evening emergence starting around 6:30โ7:30 PM, with surface action picking up as light fades. Early October Caddis (Dicosmoecus) are beginning to appear in isolated pods โ this tangerine-colored giant is a sign of things to come and fish are starting to key on them. Morning hours are producing Pale Morning Dun (PMD) action from roughly 8โ11 AM, with size 16โ18 duns on slower flats. Blue-Winged Olives (BWO) may hatch midday if cloud cover moves in, offering a great dry fly window.
Top Fly Recommendations
For Steelhead (swung and dead-drifted):
- Chubby Chernobyl (size 6โ8, orange or tan) โ skated on the surface, this is the go-to September indicator fly for swinging steelhead
- Stimulator (size 8โ10, yellow/orange) โ classic Deschutes dry-fly presentation for steelhead; match the October Caddis coloration
- Woolly Bugger (size 4โ6, black or olive) โ swing deep on a sinking tip through the classic tailouts for reluctant fish
For Resident Trout:
- Elk Hair Caddis (size 14โ16, tan or brown) โ dead-drift or skate in the evening feeding lanes
- Parachute Adams (size 16โ18) โ versatile searching pattern all day; great for PMD risers on slower water
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 16โ18) โ indicator rig in deeper runs, especially morning when hatches are building
- Copper John (size 14โ16, red or green) โ heavy enough to get down quickly in pocket water; pair with a dry dropper
Best Access Points
- Maupin City Park / Harpham Flat: Great wade access above Sherars Falls; park in town and walk the canyon paths
- Sherars Falls: Fish the pools and riffles immediately above and below the falls; above the falls is trophy trout and steelhead water
- Heritage Landing / Locked Gate: Classic float from Maupin to Heritage (17 miles) โ full day drift boat run through prime canyon steelhead water
- Trout Creek Campground: Lower river wade access; walk-in stretches hold stacked steelhead in early September
- South Junction: Put-in/take-out for the lower canyon float; remote water and less pressure
Hazards & Closures
- Smoke: Central Oregon has seen smoke events this summer. Check air quality before heading out โ if it looks hazy in Maupin, plan an early start before afternoon winds move smoke in from surrounding drainages.
- Regulations: Catch-and-release only for wild steelhead (fin-clipped hatchery fish may be retained โ check ODFW regulations for current limits). Two-handed rods and single barbless hooks required on much of the lower river.
- River Access: Respect private property boundaries between public access points. Drift boats must portage at Sherars Falls.
September on the lower Deschutes is as good as it gets in Central Oregon. The canyon is cooling down, the fish are moving, and that magic evening caddis hatch is waiting for you. Swing a Chubby through the tailout at dusk and hold on.
