Conditions & Overview

Happy Friday, Central Oregon anglers. The lower Deschutes is locked in for fall steelhead season with flows running a rock-solid 4,590 cfs at the Moody gauge near Biggs โ€” right at the high side of normal for late September (historical median ~4,420 cfs). Flows have been remarkably stable all week, holding in the 4,440โ€“4,590 cfs band without a meaningful bump. Stable flows mean predictable fish behavior, excellent water clarity, and wade-accessible runs throughout the canyon. At 59ยฐF, water temps are squarely in the prime zone for both steelhead and redside rainbow trout.

Be aware of the Wind Advisory through 11:00 PM PDT tonight. Sustained winds and gusts will affect exposed canyon runs and make presentation challenging โ€” especially for floating anglers. Seek protected bends and canyon walls if wind picks up this afternoon.

What's Hatching

October Caddis (Dicosmoecus) are showing up in the bankside vegetation โ€” the big, rusty orange ones. Full-on flights and surface action are likely within the next one to two weeks, but having orange attractor patterns ready right now is not early. They're coming. In the meantime, the overcast forecast today is ideal for Blue-Winged Olives (BWOs, size #16โ€“18) โ€” look for trout rising in long flat tailouts between 9 AM and 1 PM. Evening caddis remain active, and in the fading light swinging wet flies through the steelhead runs is as good as it gets in Oregon.

Top Fly Recommendations

Dry Flies & Attractor Patterns:

  • Elk Hair Caddis (#6โ€“10 orange/tan for October Caddis, #14โ€“16 tan/brown for evening caddis) โ€” a must-have as October Caddis numbers build.
  • Chubby Chernobyl (orange or tan, #8โ€“10) โ€” great October Caddis stand-in and dry-dropper anchor; keeps a nymph ticking through the riffles
  • Stimulator (orange, #8โ€“10) โ€” the classic. Redsides smash these when October Caddis start flying
  • Parachute Adams (#16โ€“18) โ€” versatile BWO and general mayfly imitation; ideal in the overcast morning hatch windows

Nymphs:

  • Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14โ€“18) โ€” a Deschutes staple; dead-drift through the riffles and seams all day
  • Copper John (#12โ€“16) โ€” heavy and flashy; gets down in pushy current and produces results morning to evening

Streamers & Steelhead Swings:

  • Woolly Bugger (black or olive, #4โ€“8) โ€” swing this through the classic Maupin-area steelhead runs on an intermediate or sink-tip line. Dead-slow swing, let it hang at the end, then strip. Fall steelhead crush the Woolly Bugger.

Best Access Points & Tactics

The Maupin area is your home base: Heritage Flats, town access below the bridge, and the famous Locked Gate section all deserve attention. The Mack's Canyon area in the lower canyon offers some of the most productive fall steelhead water on the river โ€” less pressure, more fish per run. Trout Creek and South Junction are popular day-trip destinations with reliable road access.

At 4,590 cfs, wading is doable but current is pushy. Bring a wading staff, wear felt-soled or studded boots, and never attempt blind crossings. Floating anglers have great conditions โ€” check BLM pass requirements, launch rules, and floating-device restrictions for your specific section before launching.

Above Sherars Falls: More accessible wading from the Maupin access points, with wide gravel bars and classic pocket water. Below Sherars Falls: The lower canyon rewards those who hike in or float โ€” big runs, less pressure, and plenty of steelhead staging before the falls.

Hazards & Closures

  • โš ๏ธ Wind Advisory through 11:00 PM PDT tonight โ€” use caution on exposed canyon floats; anchor safely in gusts
  • Check current ODFW Central Zone regulations for section-specific rules (steelhead retention, floating-device restrictions, seasonal closures by reach)
  • Respect all tribal land boundaries โ€” posted closures near the Warm Springs Reservation must be observed
  • The lower canyon is remote โ€” bring more water than you need, sun protection, and a backup shuttle plan

Flow data: USGS Gauge 14103000 (Deschutes River at Moody, near Biggs, OR) โ€” provisional. Always verify current regulations with ODFW before fishing. Tight lines!
