Deschutes River โ Lower Canyon & Maupin Area
Date: September 13, 2026 | Flow: 4,230 cfs (USGS #14103000 at Moody) | Water Temp: 59ยฐF
The lower Deschutes is in prime late-summer form as September arrives in the canyon. USGS gauge 14103000 at Moody is reading 4,230 cfs this morning โ solid, fishable flows with excellent visibility and that iconic blue-green Deschutes clarity. Water temperature is a perfect 59ยฐF (15.2ยฐC), sitting right in the sweet spot for both native redband trout and the active summer steelhead run.
Conditions Overview
Flows are moderate for this time of year, providing good wading access throughout the canyon. Water clarity is excellent. Canyon temperatures have been dropping into the 50s at night, which is energizing the trout and bringing them to the surface with more regularity. Expect some weekend traffic in the canyon โ get out early or target weekdays for the best experience.
What's Hatching
The evening caddis hatch is the show-stopper right now. Expect heavy caddis activity in the riffles and tailouts beginning around 6 PM as the canyon rim shades the water โ this is one of the finest dry-fly shows in the American West and it is firing on all cylinders in mid-September. Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) continue to provide a solid midday dry-fly window, typically 10 AMโ2 PM in smoother runs and eddies. As we push deeper into September, watch for the first reliable Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) hatches to develop โ sporadic now, but intensifying as fall sets in.
Top Fly Recommendations
- Elk Hair Caddis #14โ16 โ The go-to evening caddis pattern; dead-drift or swing it through riffles and tailouts starting at sundown.
- Chubby Chernobyl #12โ14 โ Excellent attractor and caddis imitation all day; a superb dry-dropper anchor fly as well.
- Parachute Adams #16โ18 โ Perfect for PMD risers in flat water during the midday window.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph #16โ18 โ Dead-drift under an indicator through fast runs; consistently produces redband trout all day.
- Woolly Bugger #4โ6 (black or olive) โ Essential for steelhead; swing through deep tailouts and shaded seams at first and last light.
- Stimulator #12โ14 โ Great searching dry through broken pocket water and around Sherars Falls.
- Copper John #16 โ Heavy enough to reach the bottom in fast runs; excellent when fish are holding deep.
- Zebra Midge #18โ20 โ Consistent producer early morning and on overcast days when surface activity is quiet.
Steelhead Update
The summer steelhead run is in full swing through the lower canyon. Fish are stacking in the classic holding water โ deep, shaded tailouts and the broken seams around Sherars Falls. Swing soft hackles and Woolly Buggers through the tailouts at first and last light for the best opportunity. This is arguably the finest steelhead swinging water in Oregon, and the canyon is delivering right now.
Best Access Points
- Maupin City Park โ Excellent walk-in access to productive mid-river runs and classic redband water
- Harpham Flat โ BLM day-use area; prime steelhead water above Sherars Falls
- Sherars Falls โ Iconic steelhead and redband water; no wade fishing within the falls area itself
- Beavertail Campground โ Remote canyon access for those willing to hike in; excellent uncrowded water
Hazards & Notes
Rattlesnake activity remains possible through September โ watch your step on rocky ledges and in brushy areas. The lower canyon below Sherars Falls requires single barbless flies only. Always review current ODFW regulations before targeting steelhead. Flows are stable with no active flood watch as of this report. USGS data is provisional and subject to revision.
