Current Conditions โ€” October 7, 2026

The lower Deschutes River is in outstanding form heading into peak fall trout season. USGS Gauge 14103000 at Moody recorded 4,090 CFS as of early this morning โ€” a modest rise from 3,600 CFS recorded last week, but well within comfortable, fishable range. Water temperature is holding at a productive 59ยฐF, an ideal window that keeps trout actively feeding throughout the day. Clarity remains clear to slightly off-color through the upper canyon and Maupin corridor.

โš ๏ธ Steelhead Closure Notice: The steelhead fishery is currently closed on the lower Deschutes. Trout season remains open through December 31st. West bank Warm Springs Reservation access closes October 31st โ€” plan accordingly and stay off reservation-adjacent water after that date.

What's Hatching

October on the Deschutes is a smorgasbord for dry-fly anglers. Bug activity is steady and diverse:

  • Morning Caddis: Small slate-gray and tan caddis are active at first light, drawing trout into foam lines, shaded pockets, and classic feeding lanes. Fan-cast CDC caddis patterns through rising fish water during the first two hours of daylight.
  • October Caddis: The big orange-bodied October Caddis is beginning its fall run. These large insects trigger aggressive surface grabs โ€” especially late afternoon. Trout will move significant distances for a well-presented Chubby Chernobyl or Stimulator.
  • Midday BWOs and Mahogany Duns: Blue-Winged Olives and Mahogany Duns are coming off through midday and into the afternoon. Focus on tailouts, slicks, and back eddies during these hatches โ€” look for consistent, sipping rises to small dries.
  • Midges: Active throughout the day in slower water and back eddies. Small Zebra Midges under an indicator will pick up fish when surface activity slows.

Top Fly Recommendations

All flies available at BugsNJugs.com โ€” gear up before your trip!

  • Chubby Chernobyl (#8โ€“10, orange/tan) โ€” big attractor for October Caddis; also works as a dry-dropper anchor
  • Stimulator (#10โ€“12, orange) โ€” dead-drift or skating for October Caddis eaters
  • Elk Hair Caddis (#14โ€“16, tan/gray) โ€” morning caddis sessions in foam lines and seams
  • Parachute Adams (#16โ€“20) โ€” versatile BWO and mayfly hatch coverage; never leave home without it
  • Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14โ€“18) โ€” subsurface workhorse during BWO windows; fish it as a dropper under a dry
  • Zebra Midge (#18โ€“22, black/red) โ€” midge-keyed fish in slower pools and back eddies
  • Copper John (#14โ€“16, red/green) โ€” high-stick nymphing through riffles and pocket water for aggressive fish

Best Access Points

  • Maupin Town Access & City Park: Walk-wade fishing right off the bridge; great for morning caddis. Light pressure mid-week.
  • Heritage Flats: Classic BLM wade access above Maupin โ€” wide, open water ideal for dry-fly action. Park at the gravel lot off Hwy 197.
  • Locked Gate: Upper canyon wade access; popular with guided boats but good bank-fishing water between floaters.
  • Mack's Canyon (below Sherars Falls): Remote lower canyon. Drive-in camping and excellent walk-wade trout fishing with almost no crowd pressure in October.
  • South Junction & Trout Creek: Remote lower canyon โ€” worth the drive for solitude and large, wild redband rainbows.

Hazards & Notes

At 4,090 CFS, wading is manageable but requires respect. Use studded boots or felt soles, carry a wading staff, and never cross in fast current above your knees. Flows are on a slight upward trend โ€” check the USGS real-time gauge before you head out. All major boat launches (Maupin, Locked Gate, Mack's Canyon) are operational. With steelheaders staying home, trout anglers have this world-class river largely to themselves. Don't sleep on it โ€” fall Deschutes trout fishing is as good as it gets.
