USGS gauge 14103000 (Deschutes at Moody) clocked in at 3,940 cfs this morning with water temperatures sitting at a productive 57°F (13.9°C). At these flows, wading is limited to the most experienced anglers who know the river well — this is float-fishing territory, and the trout are stacked in all the right lanes.
Hatches & Bug Activity
The bugs are putting on a show right now. Caddis are the dominant surface food across the Day Stretch and Camp Stretch (Trout Creek to Harpham Flats), with fish rising consistently throughout the day. The Salmonfly hatch is beginning to fire — guides are spotting egg-layers and stonefly shucks along the banks, with the action expected to peak over the coming week as temperatures climb. Western March Browns (drakes) are also present but fish are taking them primarily sub-surface. Evening brings the best dry fly windows; mornings favor nymphing.

Dry Flies: The Elk Hair Caddis (sizes #14–16, tan or olive) is the go-to right now — fish one as a dropper off your stonefly pattern for a deadly double-dry rig. The Chubby Chernobyl (size #6–8) is earning strikes as a salmonfly attractor, and the Stimulator in orange or yellow is a great searching pattern along rocky banks.
