Deschutes River Fishing Report – July 7, 2026: Evening Caddis Prime Time in the Lower Canyon

The lower Deschutes is fishing well this week with flows holding steady at 3,720 cfs — right in the sweet spot for summer wading and drift boat access through the Maupin corridor. Water clarity is excellent, running gin-clear through the canyon. With afternoon highs pushing into the low 90s, smart anglers are front-loading their days: be on the water by first light and plan to wrap up by late morning, then return for the evening show.
🌅 Morning Window (6 AM – 10 AM)
Early risers will find sporadic Blue-Winged Olive (BWO) activity in sizes 20–22 on the flats and slower tailouts, followed by a solid Pale Morning Dun (PMD) hatch kicking in around 8 AM. Fish are sipping in the shallower riffles and the soft seams along the canyon walls. A Parachute Adams in size 16–18 covers both hatches beautifully, and a trailing Pheasant Tail Nymph dropper (size 16) is pulling double duty. Keep your leader at 12–14 feet with 5X tippet — the water is crystal clear and the redsides get leader-shy fast.
🌇 Evening Window (6 PM – Dark)
This is the main event. Caddis — primarily Little Sister Sedge and Spotted Sedge in sizes 16–20 — are hatching heavily from 6 PM through last light. Fish are aggressive, moving confidently into the riffles and tailouts. An Elk Hair Caddis (tan, size 16–18) is the workhorse, but when fish get selective in flat water, drop down to a CDC Caddis emerger on 6X. The Chubby Chernobyl (tan/orange, size 12–14) shines as an attractor for waking and skating — a good choice for covering water quickly above Sherars Falls. A Stimulator in golden yellow size 10–12 will also draw strikes from bigger fish keying on the last of the Golden Stonefly stragglers.

- Above Sherars Falls: Harpham Flat, Oak Springs, Trout Creek — catch-and-release for trout; excellent wading and dry-fly water
- Below Sherars Falls: White River access, Maupin City Park, South Junction — boat traffic moderate; drift boats have right of way in narrow slots
⚠️ Conditions & Hazards
Water temps will climb into the upper 60s by afternoon — avoid extended fights with fish during midday heat. Steelhead regulations apply in the lower river; check ODFW regs before fishing.
