Current Conditions
The lower Deschutes is fishing well this week, with flows holding at a solid 3,720 CFS at the Moody gauge — a comfortable, wadeable level through most of the Maupin corridor. Water clarity is excellent, running gin-clear through the canyon. The biggest variable right now is heat: water temps have climbed to 65.8°F as of this morning, and by mid-afternoon the canyon is pushing 90°F+. Smart anglers are hitting the water at first light and returning to camp by noon, then picking back up around 5–6 PM for the evening magic.
Hatches & What's Working
Mid-July on the Deschutes means caddis, caddis, caddis. Evening hatches have been explosive through the Maupin and Locked Gate stretches, kicking off around 7 PM and running through dark. You'll see fish rising confidently — sometimes slashing — in the tail-outs and along seams. An Elk Hair Caddis #14–16 is absolutely the go-to evening dry right now; swing it lightly or dead-drift it through active feeding lanes.
Golden Stoneflies are winding down but their influence lingers — a Chubby Chernobyl #8–10 or Stimulator #10–12 still draws aggressive takes in the riffled runs above Sherars Falls and through Heritage Flats. Use it as a searching attractor throughout the day, especially on broken water where fish are less spooky. A Parachute Adams #14–16 rounds out the dry-fly box nicely for sporadic PMD and Pale Evening Dun activity in the morning hours (8–11 AM).
Nymphing has been consistently productive throughout the day. Drift a Pheasant Tail Nymph #14–16 or Copper John #14–16 through the deeper runs and pocket water — fish are holding in cooler, oxygenated slots during the warm afternoons. A two-nymph rig under an indicator works especially well above Sherars Falls. Don't overlook a Woolly Bugger #8–10 on a short-line swing through the deeper canyon pools — the bigger wild redside rainbows haven't lost their streamer instincts.

- Above Sherars Falls: Maupin City Park (Hwy 197 bridge), Heritage Flats, Wapinitia Run — excellent wade access, good parking
- Below Sherars Falls: Mack's Canyon BLM Campground (13 miles north of Maupin on BLM Rd 3560), Trout Creek Campground — primitive road, high-clearance vehicle recommended
- South Junction: Good floating access; check BLM permit requirements for overnight floats

The Deschutes wild redside rainbow is a treasure — treat it like one. Selective gear rules apply throughout — artificial lures with barbless hooks only.
