Crooked River Fly Fishing Report โ€” October 17, 2026

Location: Crooked River below Bowman Dam โ€” Terrebonne / Crooked River Ranch area | Reported by: Bugs & Jugs Fly Fishing

Current Conditions at a Glance

  • Flow (USGS #14087400 โ€“ below Opal Springs, Culver): 1,210 CFS (provisional, as of 6:00 AM PDT)
  • Water Temperature: 53.8ยฐF (12.1ยฐC)
  • Clarity: Off-Color to Turbid
  • Overall Rating: โš ๏ธ Poor

The Crooked River is running dramatically higher than its typical fall tailwater flows this weekend, and anglers should plan accordingly. USGS gauge #14087400 recorded 1,210 CFS this morning โ€” a sharp contrast to the 37 CFS reported by local fly shops just 11 days ago on October 6th. This significant rise is consistent with recent precipitation events across the upper basin and likely elevated releases from Bowman Dam. The lower gauge at Opal Springs captures additional spring input, but the combined reading of 1,210 CFS reflects genuinely elevated conditions throughout the corridor.

At these flows, the Crooked is running fast, high, and carrying suspended sediment. Traditional wade fishing in this section is extremely difficult and potentially dangerous โ€” wading the Crooked at 1,200+ CFS is not recommended for anyone without expert-level river skills and appropriate safety gear. Water temperatures at 53.8ยฐF are ideal for trout metabolism, and fish are certainly present and feeding โ€” but access and visibility are the primary limiting factors today.

What to Expect

When the Crooked runs high like this, trout push tight to the banks, into eddies, and behind any available structure to escape the main current. The midge fishery that defines this tailwater doesn't disappear at elevated flows โ€” it just moves. Look for fish stacked in the slower water behind large boulders, in cut banks, and at the downstream ends of gravel bars. Blue-Winged Olives often hatch during overcast October afternoons regardless of flow, and October Caddis have been spotted in the streamside vegetation in recent weeks.

If you do venture out, fish from the bank rather than wading in. A long rod (9โ€“10 ft) with a heavy sink-tip or weighted nymphs is your best bet for getting down to where fish are holding. Indicator nymphing from stable bank positions in eddy water can be productive even in high flows.

Fly Recommendations for High Water

All available at bugsnjugs.com:

  • Woolly Bugger (size 4โ€“8, black or olive) โ€” The best bet for high, off-color water; strip it aggressively along the bank edges and through deeper eddy pools. Trout can't ignore the movement and profile.
  • Copper John (size 12โ€“14, red or chartreuse) โ€” Bright, heavy nymph that gets down fast; the flash draws strikes in off-color conditions when subtlety is lost on fish.
  • Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 14โ€“16) โ€” Weighted versions fished under an indicator in protected eddy water can produce when the main current subsides near structure.
  • Zebra Midge (size 18โ€“20) โ€” Keep these ready for when flows moderate; the Crooked's midges are legendary and this is the prime imitation.
  • Parachute Adams (size 18โ€“20) โ€” Hold onto these for the next visit โ€” the BWO dry fly action on the Crooked is exceptional when flows drop back to fishable levels.

Access Points & Outlook

Primary access along Crooked River Ranch Road and the lower canyon remains available by vehicle. However, wading across the river or accessing mid-river bars is not advisable at current flows. The Skull Hollow Campground area and Lower Crooked River National Back Country Byway provide roadside access where bank fishing from stable ledges is possible.

Outlook: Watch flows closely over the next several days. If precipitation eases and releases moderate, the Crooked can drop dramatically โ€” this tailwater is capable of returning to fishable conditions within 3โ€“5 days of a flow reduction. When it does drop back to the 50โ€“150 CFS range, conditions typically become outstanding: clear water, active midge and BWO hatches, and eager Redband trout in a canyon that feels like your own private fishery. Check the USGS gauge daily at waterdata.usgs.gov.

Safety Notice

  • Do NOT attempt to wade the Crooked River at 1,200+ CFS. Currents are powerful and footing is treacherous.
  • Bank erosion and unstable edges are possible at elevated flows โ€” stay well back from crumbling cutbanks.
  • Children and dogs should be kept well away from the water's edge.

Report based on USGS real-time gauge data (provisional, subject to revision) and local fishing reports. Conditions can change rapidly on dam-controlled tailwaters โ€” always check current gauge data before making the drive.
