Crooked River โ€“ Below Bowman Dam | Terrebonne / Crooked River Ranch | September 27, 2026

Current Conditions Snapshot: The Crooked River is running at elevated flows this weekend โ€” USGS gauge 14087400 (below Opal Springs, near Culver) read 1,190 CFS this morning, which is above typical fall levels for this tailwater fishery. Water temperature is holding at a cool and healthy 54.5ยฐF, characteristic of this spring-fed system. Despite the higher flows limiting traditional wading, the Crooked's trout are actively feeding and the fall hatch cycle is underway.

Flow & Clarity

At 1,190 CFS, the Crooked is pushing harder than usual through the basalt canyon. The mainstem is fast and deep, making mid-river wading challenging in most sections. That said, clarity remains excellent โ€” this tailwater runs crystal clear year-round thanks to Bowman Dam and the influence of Opal Springs. Focus your efforts on slower side channels, inside bends, protected pockets behind large basalt boulders, and bankside eddies where fish are holding out of the main current. The elevated flows concentrate trout into the softer water, and a savvy angler can still put up impressive numbers.

What's Hatching

September marks the beginning of one of the Crooked River's most beloved hatch events:

  • Mahogany Duns (Paraleptophlebia): The big fall event is here. Mahogany Duns typically hatch from late morning through early afternoon on the Crooked in September, and 2026 is looking promising with cool temps triggering solid emergences. Match these with a size 14โ€“16 Parachute Adams in a reddish-brown shade โ€” fishing it in the film on quiet edges is deadly when the rise starts.
  • Midges: The ever-reliable midge hatch is year-round on the Crooked but especially productive in early morning. Small clusters of midges in sizes 20โ€“24 bring fish to the surface, and a Zebra Midge fished subsurface just below the surface film is consistently the top producer on this river.
  • Blue-Winged Olives (Baetis): Overcast afternoons bring sporadic BWO activity. A #16โ€“18 Parachute Adams doubles as an excellent BWO pattern in a pinch.
  • Tan/Brown Caddis: Some residual late-season caddis activity in the evening, particularly near slower water.

Top Fly Recommendations

The Crooked rewards precise presentations and small flies:

  • ๐Ÿชฐ Zebra Midge (#18โ€“22) โ€” The #1 producer on this river, bar none. Fish it solo or as a trailer off a larger dry
  • ๐Ÿชฐ Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14โ€“18) โ€” Mahogany Dun nymph and general attractor; outstanding sub-surface choice
  • ๐Ÿชฐ Copper John (#14โ€“16) โ€” Weighted and visible; great for getting into the strike zone in heavier current seams
  • ๐Ÿชฐ Parachute Adams (#14โ€“18) โ€” Match Mahogany Duns and BWOs; a must-have dry for the Crooked in fall
  • ๐Ÿชฐ Elk Hair Caddis (#14โ€“16) โ€” Evening caddis activity and general attractor
  • ๐Ÿชฐ Woolly Bugger (#6โ€“8, olive or black) โ€” Strip through the deeper pools for aggressive large trout at elevated flows

Tactics for Elevated Flows

When the Crooked is running high like today, adjust your approach:

  • Target inside bends and eddies โ€” trout stack here to rest in the soft water
  • Use a heavier nymph rig (Copper John or weighted Pheasant Tail) to get down fast in the choppier water
  • Fish a Woolly Bugger on a swing or short strips through pocket water โ€” aggressive trout will chase
  • Dry-fly fishing is still possible in the slowest tailouts and back-eddies โ€” perfect for the Mahogany Dun rise

Best Access Points

  • Peter Skene Ogden State Scenic Viewpoint (Terrebonne) โ€” Most popular access, parking area with trailhead into the canyon
  • Lower Canyon Trailhead โ€” BLM access, additional walk-in access through the canyon
  • Chimney Rock Trailhead โ€” Excellent canyon section, less pressure than Ogden Wayside
  • Crooked River Ranch โ€” Private subdivision with some maintained river access for anglers; check current access status
  • Lone Pine Access โ€” Upper sections closer to Bowman Dam, good for targeting the first stretch below the dam

Hazards & Reminders

  • Do not wade main channel at current flows โ€” fast current over slick basalt is extremely dangerous; stay to edges and shallower pockets
  • Rattlesnakes are still active on the warm canyon walls โ€” keep your eyes open when moving through rocky terrain
  • The canyon trail can be steep and exposed โ€” sturdy footwear is a must
  • All trout on the Crooked River below Bowman Dam are catch-and-release; barbless hooks are required
  • An Oregon fishing license is required โ€” pick yours up before heading to the canyon
