Current Conditions Overview

The Crooked River's legendary Wild and Scenic stretch below Bowman Dam is producing excellent fall fishing this week. Water temperature is holding at a crisp, trout-ideal 55.0ยฐF (12.8ยฐC), and clarity is crystal clear โ€” the hallmark of this spring-influenced canyon system. *Note on flows: USGS gauge #14087400 is located below Opal Springs near Culver, where large spring contributions significantly increase total discharge. The primary fishing section above Opal Springs โ€” the corridor near Terrebonne and Crooked River Ranch โ€” reflects Bowman Dam release volumes and typically runs considerably lower. Expect wading conditions in the 150โ€“350 cfs range for the upper section based on seasonal dam operations. Either way, conditions in the canyon are excellent.

๐ŸŽฃ Fishing Conditions

The 10โ€“12 mile Wild and Scenic section of the Crooked is among Central Oregon's most productive trout fisheries โ€” and September is one of its finest months. Summer pressure has eased, air and water temps are settling into the sweet spot, and fall hatches are coming into their own. The river holds a thriving, entirely self-sustaining population of wild redband rainbow trout โ€” no hatchery fish here. These are athletic, selective, and rewarding fish that average 10โ€“14 inches with some quality fish pushing 16โ€“18 inches in the deeper pools. Mountain whitefish are equally abundant and will eagerly hit nymphs when trout are being difficult.

๐Ÿชฐ Fall Hatches โ€” What's Active Right Now

Mahogany Duns (Paraleptophlebia) are the headliner this week. These small, dark-bodied mayflies emerge during the late morning โ€” typically 10 AM to 1 PM โ€” and the Crooked's redband trout respond with confident, head-up rises in slower runs and pool tails. A Parachute Adams (size 16โ€“18) is the natural go-to for covering this hatch; it sits high in the film and is visible even on choppy riffles. If fish are tracking emergers just below the surface, switch to a soft-hackle or unweighted Pheasant Tail just under the meniscus.

Midges are the year-round backbone of the Crooked's fishery and are fishing superbly right now. Early morning finds fish sipping midge clusters in a lazy, porpoising rise โ€” don't mistake it for selectivity; they're eating. The Zebra Midge (sizes 18โ€“22, red abdomen or black with silver wire) is the single most effective pattern on this river. Pair it as a dropper under a Chubby Chernobyl (size 10โ€“12) for a high-visibility indicator rig that lets you cover runs efficiently. The Chubby also stands in for the last of the season's terrestrials โ€” hoppers and beetles that blow off the canyon rim remain worth imitating through late September.

For those who prefer to nymph, a Copper John (size 16โ€“18, red or natural copper) is a killer attractor pattern for both trout and whitefish in the faster pockets and runs. Trail a Pheasant Tail Nymph behind it as a more natural trailing fly for a deadly two-nymph rig.

๐Ÿ“ Best Access Points

  • Hwy 27 Corridor (BLM) โ€” Multiple pullouts along the canyon road from Bowman Dam downstream; great walk-in wade access to different river sections
  • Chimney Rock Campground โ€” BLM fee campground with excellent wading and accessible fishing platform (ADA-accessible); classic pool-riffle structure
  • Palisades Campground โ€” Another solid BLM access point with accessible fishing platform; good midge and mahogany dun water in the flats above
  • Cobble Rock Area โ€” Productive wade fishing with well-defined runs, riffles, and pools; accessible and beginner-friendly gradient

โš ๏ธ Hazards & Regulations

The Wild and Scenic reach below Bowman Dam is catch-and-release only for trout โ€” all rainbows must be released unharmed. Mountain whitefish may be retained (check current ODFW limits). Use barbless hooks or crimp barbs โ€” it's the right move for this fishery. The cobble streambed is notoriously slick; studded wading boots or felt soles are strongly recommended. Rattlesnakes are still active on warm fall afternoons โ€” give rocky outcroppings a wide berth. Canyon walls along Hwy 27 can shed loose rock; park and walk with awareness.
