Crooked River โ Below Bowman Dam | Terrebonne / Crooked River Ranch | September 20, 2026
Flow: 1,280 cfs (USGS Gauge 14087400 โ Crooked River Below Opal Springs, near Culver) | Water Temp: 55ยฐF (12.8ยฐC) | Clarity: Clear
The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is producing some of the best dry fly fishing in Central Oregon right now, and it's vastly under-fished compared to the Deschutes. Spring-fed and gin-clear, the river is running at an ideal 55ยฐF โ right in the sweet spot for aggressive rainbow trout feeding throughout the day. September is when this river truly hits its stride, and conditions heading into this weekend are outstanding.
Gauge note: USGS gauge 14087400 measures flows at the Opal Springs confluence downstream of the primary fly fishing section; large spring input inflates the downstream reading. The Bowman Dam to Crooked River Ranch reach โ where most wading takes place โ is running at lower, wade-friendly flows.
๐ What's Hatching
September's hatch calendar on the Crooked is diverse and rewarding. Blue-Winged Olives (Baetis) have been hatching reliably from mid-morning into early afternoon (sizes 20โ22) โ fish are rising in predictable feeding lanes and respond well to a technical drift. PMDs (Pale Morning Duns) are mixed into the morning activity, peaking before 11 AM. Tan and black caddis (sizes 14โ16) pop off around midday and into the afternoon. Early October Caddis are showing up in riverside vegetation โ a sign that the river's best hatch season is just beginning. Midges are present all day, every day, year-round on this spring-fed gem. For the adventurous, swinging soft hackles and small leeches through fast runs on a light spey or single-hand rod is producing excellent results.
๐ช Top Fly Recommendations
Stock up at BugsNJugs โ these patterns are dialed in right now:
- Parachute Adams (sizes 18โ22) โ perfectly matches both the BWO and PMD hatches; the most versatile dry fly in your box for the Crooked this time of year
- Elk Hair Caddis (sizes 14โ16) โ effective during the midday caddis window; try a slight downstream drag at the end of the drift to trigger strikes
- Zebra Midge (sizes 18โ22) โ the Crooked's year-round workhorse nymph; run it as a dropper under any dry fly or in a two-fly nymph rig
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (sizes 16โ20) โ deadly subsurface imitation for fish that won't fully commit to the dry during the BWO window
- Copper John (sizes 14โ16) โ attractor nymph for deeper cuts and faster water between riffles; gets down quickly in heavy pocket water
- Woolly Bugger (sizes 8โ10, olive or black) โ swing it through fast runs on a 3-weight trout spey or single-hand rod as October Caddis activity builds; expect aggressive takes
๐ Best Access Points
- Lone Pine Campground (BLM) โ near Terrebonne; excellent wade access to the upper section below Bowman Dam with good parking
- Crooked River Ranch โ multiple BLM access corridors through the community provide quality wade access; spectacular September canyon light
- Lower Canyon Road โ take Hwy 97 south to Terrebonne, then follow Crooked River Hwy into the canyon; numerous roadside pullouts with direct wade access
โ ๏ธ Conditions, Hazards & Notes
Overall rating: Good. Crystal-clear, spring-fed water rewards technical presentations โ use 5Xโ6X tippet and approach rising fish carefully. September means lighter crowds than summer, especially midweek. No ODFW closures currently affecting this reach. The canyon walls can be warm mid-afternoon โ pack plenty of water and sunscreen. Watch for rattlesnakes on warm rock ledges. Slippery moss on basalt boulders makes wading staffs a smart investment. This is a catch-and-release only section for trout โ barbless hooks required.
