Crooked River โ Below Bowman Dam | September 17, 2026
USGS Gauge 14087400 (Below Opal Springs, near Culver): 1,340 CFS | Water Temp: 55ยฐF | Measured 5:00 AM PDT (provisional)
โ ๏ธ ELEVATED FLOW ADVISORY: Flows have spiked dramatically from 142 CFS on September 11 to 1,340 CFS today โ nearly a 10ร increase. Wading is hazardous in most sections. Fish from the bank where possible, wear a wading belt, and use a staff. Monitor USGS gauge 14087400 before heading out.
The Crooked River has transformed almost overnight. What was a low, gin-clear tailwater fishery a week ago is now running fast, high, and off-color. Early-fall precipitation in the upper watershed โ combined with possible reservoir management at Bowman Dam โ has pushed flows well above safe wading thresholds. The river's character is changed, but fish are still there, and strategic anglers can still have productive days.
๐ฃ Current Fishing Approach
At these elevated flows, the fish have evacuated the main channel and retreated to softer water: behind large boulders, in shallow back-eddies along the bank, and in any current seam that offers relief from the push. Your primary strategy should be tight to the bank, heavy nymphing with quick presentations.
Lead with a Copper John #14โ16 or heavy Pheasant Tail Nymph #14โ16 with enough split shot to get the fly to the bottom fast. A Zebra Midge #18โ20 (red wire, black bead) trailed 12โ18 inches below makes an excellent dropper. Short drifts, tight to structure, with a strike indicator set shallow.
In any slower, cloudy back-pocket water, a Woolly Bugger #8 in black or olive stripped slowly can draw aggressive strikes from trout that haven't eaten in a day.
๐ชฐ Hatch Outlook
Surface action is largely on hold while the river is off-color. However, September normally marks the beginning of the Mahogany Dun hatch on the Crooked โ one of the river's most anticipated fall events. As flows drop and clarity returns over the coming days, watch for these #14โ16 dark-olive/brown mayflies emerging in afternoon light. Keep a Parachute Adams #16 or Comparadun in your box for any risers you find in the calmer pockets. Caddis and midges are also present in lower numbers.
๐ Access Points
- Highway 27 Corridor (south from Terrebonne): Primary access route to the Wild & Scenic reach; multiple pullouts along the canyon road
- Chimney Rock (BLM Day-Use Area): Good parking; canyon views; approach fish from the bank โ don't wade deep
- Crooked River Ranch (north side): Upper canyon access; watch private property boundaries carefully at these flows
- Ogden Wayside: Lower access near the Deschutes confluence; check conditions before committing to a hike
โ ๏ธ Hazards & Regulations
Wading hazard is HIGH. At 1,340 CFS, the Crooked River is flowing at more than 9ร its recent baseline. Do not attempt crossings. Fish from the bank, stay back from the edge on wet rock, and wear your wading belt cinched tight. Flows should drop over the next several days โ check the USGS gauge daily before heading out.
Regulations reminder: no harvest of rainbow trout over 20 inches โ catch-and-release only for those big Crooked River redbands. The river is open year-round to fishing.
When conditions normalize, this stretch will fish exceptionally well. The Crooked's wild redband rainbows are fat, feisty, and hungry โ and the Mahogany Dun hatch is just around the corner.
