Crooked River Fishing Report β September 15, 2026: Prime Dry Fly Action Below Bowman Dam
Elk Hair Caddis, Zebra Midge, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Copper John, Parachute Adams
Crooked River β September 15, 2026
The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is fishing exceptionally well as we move deeper into September. Clear, cold water flowing through the Wild and Scenic canyon near Terrebonne and Crooked River Ranch is delivering some of the best dry fly action of the year β Mahogany Duns are beginning to appear alongside consistent caddis and PMD hatches. If you haven't fished the Crooked this fall, now is the time.
Current Conditions
- Flow: ~140β150 cfs in the prime fishing section directly below Bowman Dam (per recent local reports). Note: USGS Gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver) reads 1,250 cfs β this reflects substantial cold spring input from Opal Springs approximately 5 miles downstream of Bowman Dam and is not representative of flows in the primary fishing reach.
- Water Temperature: 55Β°F (12.6Β°C) at gauge β crystal-cold and optimal for redband trout activity throughout the day
- Clarity: Clear β gin-clear, technical conditions; stealth and fine tippet are essential
- Water Source: Prineville Reservoir (Bowman Dam) is at ~26% capacity; flows are low but stable and ideal for wading
Hatch Report
September is a transitional month on the Crooked β summer PMDs give way to fall Mahogany Duns and consistent caddis and midge activity fills the gaps. Expect good dry fly opportunities from mid-morning through mid-afternoon.
- Pale Morning Duns (PMD) β Size 16β18 | Active | Morning: PMDs continue to produce morning rises, especially in slower, flat-water sections. Soft hackles and PMD nymphs equally effective sub-surface.
- Blue-Winged Olives (Baetis) β Size 20 | Moderate | Late MorningβNoon: BWOs popping off around midday, especially on overcast days. Look for sipping rises in long, slow glides.
- Caddis (Black) β Size 16 | Moderate | Midday: Black caddis are active at midday. A dark Elk Hair Caddis or similar pattern is the right call.
- Mahogany Duns β Size 14β16 | Emerging | Afternoon: The classic September hatch on the Crooked is beginning to show. Expect numbers to build through October β have a few Mahogany Dun imitations in your box.
- Midges β Size 20β24 | Consistent | All Day: Midges are always present and always productive on the Crooked. A reliable sub-surface option any time the surface action is quiet.
Top Fly Recommendations
All patterns available at bugsnjugs.com:
- Elk Hair Caddis (Size 16, dark/black) β Match the active black caddis hatch perfectly. Fish it dead-drift along the banks and in seams where trout are holding under overhanging brush.
- Zebra Midge (Size 20β22) β A year-round staple on the Crooked. Fish it as a dropper under a PMD or caddis dry, or under an indicator in 2β4 ft of water. Deadly all day long.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (Size 14β18) β Covers PMD, BWO, and general nymph fishing perfectly. One of the most productive sub-surface patterns on this river throughout September.
- Copper John (Size 16β18) β An excellent attractor nymph that gets down fast in the faster runs and riffles. Pair it with a Zebra Midge dropper for a lethal two-fly rig.
- Parachute Adams (Size 18β20) β The versatile BWO and general emerger match. Works throughout the day when trout are rising to duns in the flats and slower pools.
Fishing Tips
- In clear, low water, use 6X tippet minimum and approach rising fish carefully from downstream. These redband trout are smart.
- Two-fly nymph rigs (Pheasant Tail + Zebra Midge, or Copper John + Zebra Midge) outfish single-fly setups consistently in this fishery.
- Focus on the deeper seams along canyon walls and the tailouts of pools for the largest fish holding off the main current.
Best Access Points
- Below Bowman Dam (Lone Pine Road) β The top of the Wild and Scenic reach; easy dam-side access and the first productive water below the reservoir.
- Chimney Rock Campground (BLM) β Excellent access to the mid-canyon reach with accessible fishing platforms available.
- Palisades Campground (BLM) β Good canyon access with an accessible fishing platform; walk downstream for less-pressured water.
- Crooked River Ranch β Community access via the ranch; check for public access points along Lower Ranch Road.
- Terrebonne area β Lower canyon access points; a short walk from parking delivers you to quality redband water.
Hazards & Advisories
- Rattlesnakes: Active on warm afternoons on the rocky canyon walls and basalt ledges. Always watch where you place your hands and feet.
- Wading: Low, clear flows make wading easy but highly visible to fish. Wade slowly and use the shadows. Footing can be slippery on algae-covered basalt.
- Low reservoir: Prineville Reservoir at 26% capacity means flows could continue to drop into fall. No artificial closures noted; check ODFW for any late-season updates.
- Parking: BLM sites fill early on weekends β arrive before 8 AM for the best spots.
