Crooked River Fishing Report โ October 5, 2026: High Flows Below Bowman Dam, BWOs & Selective Redbands
Parachute Adams, Zebra Midge, Pheasant Tail Nymph, Copper John, Chubby Chernobyl
Date: October 5, 2026 | Gauge: USGS #14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver, OR)
Current Conditions Overview
The Crooked River is running significantly elevated this morning. The USGS gauge below Opal Springs near Culver (USGS #14087400) recorded 1,270 cfs as of 5:00 AM PDT, with water temperatures at 55°F (12.8°C). This is well above the typical fall baseline for this tailwater, and anglers should plan accordingly. Despite the challenging flows, the fish are there โ they just require adapted tactics.
Flow & Water Clarity
The Culver gauge captures combined flows from Bowman Dam releases plus the significant Opal Springs groundwater input (which typically contributes 300โ500 cfs of crystal-clear spring water downstream). Estimated flows in the prime tailwater section immediately below Bowman Dam โ near Terrebonne and Crooked River Ranch โ are running 700โ900+ cfs. At these levels, the river is moving fast. The dam-release water retains good clarity closer to the dam, but downstream reaches pick up some off-color sediment. Wading must be approached with extreme caution; stick to bank fishing or very shallow, stable gravel edges.
Hatches & Fly Recommendations
October on the Crooked River means Blue-Winged Olives, full stop. BWO activity (Baetis, size 18โ22) picks up midday when light is low or overcast โ cloud cover dramatically improves the hatch intensity. Look for fish holding and rising in any available softer water: the inside of bends, slack pockets behind exposed rocks and root wads, and the seam edges where fast and slow water meet. Our Parachute Adams (size 18โ20) is the go-to surface pattern when BWOs are popping โ it rides high and is easy to track in broken water.
Midges are your bread and butter on high-flow days when hatches are sporadic. The Zebra Midge (size 20โ22, black or red) is outstanding year-round on the Crooked โ fish it deep and slow in any pocket of reduced current you can find. A Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 16โ18) rounds out a classic two-nymph rig that covers both BWO nymphs and general invertebrate food items.
In elevated flows, getting your flies to depth quickly is critical. Add a Copper John (size 14โ16) as your lead fly โ its weight and flash get your rig down fast and attract attention even in off-color conditions. The Chubby Chernobyl rigged as a large indicator with a Zebra Midge dropper is also effective for covering water and keeping your presentation in the zone.
Best Access Points
- Lone Pine Campground / Below Bowman Dam (first 0.5 mi) โ Closest access below the dam; clearest water and the most hospitable wading (still use caution at current flows)
- OR-27 corridor pullouts (Mile Markers 1โ5) โ Multiple roadside pull-outs below Prineville Reservoir; fish the seams and inside bends with a nymph rig
- Crooked River Ranch canyon access โ The deeper canyon pockets provide sheltered holding water for fish pushed out of open runs by high flows
High-Water Tactics
Adapt your approach for elevated flows. Short-line nymphing (tight-line or Euro-nymphing style) keeps your flies in the strike zone longer without drag in mixed currents. Focus on any deviation in the current: sheltered water behind boulders and undercut banks, the inside of every bend, and seam lines where fast and slow water converge. These are the prime holding zones when high flows push fish out of their normal summer runs. Lengthen your leader and use heavier tippet (4Xโ5X) to help turnover in wind and manage fish in stronger current.
Hazards & Notes
Do not attempt to wade the main channel at these flows โ it is dangerous. Wading staff mandatory for any water entry. Focus on bank fishing from stable gravel bars. Flows on the Crooked can shift rapidly based on Bowman Dam operations โ check USGS Gauge #14087400 before you leave home and again when you arrive. This section is catch-and-release only for trout โ always verify current ODFW regulations before fishing.
