Current Conditions

The Crooked River is running high today at 1,270 cfs โ€” significantly above its typical fall baseline of 150โ€“400 cfs. Elevated reservoir releases from Prineville Reservoir via Bowman Dam are pushing flows into the range where conditions become challenging. Water temperature is a healthy 54ยฐF, which is excellent for trout activity, but turbidity is the story today: the river is running off-color with visibility limited to roughly 12โ€“18 inches. Fishing is definitely possible, but anglers will need to adjust tactics and target the right water.

Hatches & What's Working

October is typically one of the best months for BWO (Blue-Winged Olive) hatches on the Crooked, and that's still likely to be the case when overcast skies move in โ€” but with off-color water, subsurface presentations are your best bet right now. The reliable go-to in high, murky conditions is the Zebra Midge (size 18โ€“22, black with silver wire) dead-drifted tight to the bank in calmer water pockets. This is when midge fishing really shines โ€” the fish can still find small, high-contrast flies near structure even when visibility is limited.

The Copper John in red or green (size 14โ€“16) is a proven dirty-water pattern on the Crooked โ€” it sinks fast, pushes a little flash, and gives fish something to key on when visibility is down. Fish these heavy along the seams between fast and slow water. The Pheasant Tail Nymph in a beadhead version (size 14โ€“16) is also worth a drift in the slower inside bends where sediment is settling and visibility is marginally better.

If flows moderate through the day and clarity improves even slightly, the Parachute Adams (size 16โ€“18) is your dry fly call for any BWO or Mahogany Dun activity you might catch in afternoon windows. October also occasionally brings a Pale Morning Dun burst โ€” but with today's flows, save the dry box for calmer conditions.

For streamer action, the Woolly Bugger in olive or black can be devastatingly effective in high, off-color water โ€” strip it along undercut banks and deeper pools where the larger fish are holding tight to structure and looking for a meal.

Access Points

  • Crooked River Ranch area โ€“ Pull off at established BLM access points above and below the ranch community. The canyon walls compress the river here and create defined seams even at high flows. Stick to the slower inside bends.
  • Lower Crooked River State Scenic Waterway โ€“ Multiple pullouts along OR-27 provide road-walk-in access. At current flows, stay out of the main current โ€” bank fish from gravel bars and ledges.
  • Terrebonne area / NF-400 Road โ€“ Walk-in access near the lower canyon; some of the best pocket water on the system is accessible here at lower risk than open riffles.

Hazards & Notes

Important: At 1,270 cfs, wading the Crooked River is dangerous and not recommended in most sections. The riverbed is slick basalt and the current is deceptively strong at these flows. Bank fishing, streamer swinging from stable gravel bars, and tight-line nymphing from the edge are the safe moves today. Monitor USGS gauge #14087400 for updates โ€” if flows drop below 600 cfs, wading opens back up significantly. No closures are currently in effect. The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is catch-and-release only for trout โ€” handle fish with wet hands, minimize air time, and revive thoroughly in slower water before release.

Bottom Line

Today's Crooked River is a patience game โ€” high flows make it challenging, but the fish are still there and the water temp is on your side. Focus on slower inside bends and bank structure, lead with a Zebra Midge or Copper John, and watch for any improvement in clarity through the afternoon. When flows normalize โ€” likely within the week if reservoir operations moderate โ€” the Crooked will be fishing absolutely brilliantly with peak fall BWO and midge hatches on tap.
