Current Conditions Overview
The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is running high and fast this week as irrigation season ramps up in the Prineville Basin. USGS gauge 14087400 recorded 1,350 cfs this morning with water temperatures at 54°F (12.4°C) — considerably elevated above the 200–400 cfs that makes this tailwater world-class. The off-color water and strong current have pushed most fish tight to the banks and into softer seams behind boulders. Float fishers and anglers with long casts will fare best today.
Hatches & Bug Activity
Despite the challenging flows, the bugs don't care about the flow gauge — and neither do the fish when there's food on the menu. The Mother's Day Caddis hatch is absolutely firing right now on the Crooked. Expect thick clouds of caddis in the afternoons and evenings, with the most surface-feeding activity occurring in softer water along the banks and in back-eddies behind large boulders. Look for caddis with a bright green egg sac — the fish have keyed in on this specific pattern. Midges remain active in the mornings, and small mayfly (PMD/BWO) activity offers additional feeding opportunities during overcast windows.
Top Fly Recommendations
Dry Flies: The Elk Hair Caddis (size #14–16, peacock body or olive) is the #1 fly on the Crooked right now — especially effective in the evening. The Parachute Adams (size #16–18) is a reliable all-day searching pattern for rising fish in slow seams. Add a trailing caddis pupa or shuck imitation for a powerful dry-dropper combo.
Nymphs: Sub-surface is where you'll find the most consistent action at high flows. The Zebra Midge (size #18–20, black/silver) is a proven Crooked River staple, while the Pheasant Tail Nymph (size #16) excels as a caddis pupa stand-in during the hatch. The Copper John (green or olive, size #16) adds flash and weight to cut through the current and reach fish holding on the bottom.
Streamers: A Woolly Bugger in olive or brown swung through deep runs can draw aggressive strikes from larger redband trout that have pushed into the deeper slots with the elevated flows.
Best Access Points
With 1,350 cfs, most wading access is difficult and should be approached with extreme caution. The most fishable water is found immediately below Bowman Dam (off Lone Pine Road), where flows are slightly more manageable and fish stack up below the dam face. The Crooked River Ranch area offers additional bank access; focus on outer bends where current eddies form pockets of slower water. The BLM day-use sites off SW Iris Lane provide safe bank-fishing positions without requiring a wade.
