Crooked River Fishing Report — June 27, 2026

Note: The USGS gauge below Opal Springs captures the combined flow including a large spring input from the Opal Springs complex. The prime fly fishing corridor immediately below Bowman Dam flows at approximately 250 cfs — well within ideal range.
Current Conditions
The Crooked River is fishing exceptionally well heading into the last weekend of June. Flows in the prime Wild and Scenic corridor below Bowman Dam have settled around 250 cfs — up modestly from the 180 cfs of early June due to irrigation season demands, but still totally fishable. With Prineville Reservoir sitting at approximately 50% capacity, flows are expected to hold steady rather than spike further.
Water temperatures are a trout-perfect 55°F, courtesy of consistent cold-water releases from Bowman Dam. The same front that brought cooling to Maupin this weekend is delivering welcome cloud cover to the Crooked drainage — fish are active throughout the day rather than retreating to shade during peak afternoon heat. Today may be one of the better all-day fishing days the Crooked has offered this month.
Hatches
Caddis are the headliner on the Crooked right now, with reliable emergences along most of the 10-mile Wild and Scenic corridor — especially strong in evening. PMDs are providing a solid daytime dry-fly option, and midges — the Crooked's faithful year-round staple — remain productive at any hour. Bug density isn't overwhelming, but there are enough insects on the water to keep trout looking up consistently through the afternoon and into dusk.
Spawner Advisory: Guide reports confirm late-season spawning fish are still present at the top of Big Bend Campground. Wade carefully in this section and avoid disturbing visible redds. These fish represent the future of the fishery — give them space.
Top Fly Recommendations
- Elk Hair Caddis (#14–16) — prime dry fly for evening caddis emergences
- Parachute Adams (#16–18) — excellent match for PMDs and general mayfly activity
- Zebra Midge (#18–22) — bread-and-butter nymph for the Crooked, fish it all day under an indicator
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) — outstanding in deeper runs, especially mid-canyon
- Copper John (#16–18) — heavy anchor fly in tandem nymph rigs, gets down fast
- Woolly Bugger (#8, olive or brown) — leech and sculpin imitation, strip slowly near structure and undercut banks
- Chubby Chernobyl (#12–14) — excellent dry-dropper top fly; floats well and is easy to track
- Stimulator (#14) — works as a hopper or caddis imitation in faster riffles and pocket water
Best Access Points
- Bowman Dam (Ochoco National Forest) — parking and direct access to the top of the Wild and Scenic section; highest fish concentration in the first two miles
- Chimney Rock Trailhead (BLM) — mid-canyon access through stunning basalt scenery, quality uncrowded water
- Big Bend Campground — mid-river access; wade carefully near top of campground (spawners present)
- Lower Canyon Road pullouts — multiple informal access points to less-pressured water in the lower corridor
- Crooked River Ranch area — lower section access; note some private land in this stretch — respect posted boundaries
