Current Conditions Overview
The Crooked River is running on the high side this week at 1,160 cfs — significantly above the typical summer baseline for this tailwater section. Late-season snowmelt from the Ochoco Mountains combined with irrigation-related releases are keeping the river elevated and off-color through most wadeable reaches. Wading is challenging in many traditional spots; use caution and a wading staff, and focus on bankside eddies and slower water where fish are stacking up to avoid the main current.
The silver lining: water temperature is a cold and trout-friendly 55.4°F this morning — outstanding for fish health and feeding activity. Trout are feeding aggressively in the slower margins, especially during hatch windows.
Hatches & What's Working
Midges remain the workhorse of the Crooked River this time of year, and they're coming off reliably through midday. A Zebra Midge in #18–#22 (black/red or black/silver) fished under a small indicator or Euro-nymphing style is the single most consistent producer right now. Don't overlook clustering midge clusters on the surface film — a small Griffith's Gnat or parachute-style dry can draw sipping fish in the slacker water.
Caddis activity is sporadic but present, particularly in the late afternoon and early evening. A Elk Hair Caddis in #14–#16 tan is worth having on as a dropper or searching pattern. PMD (Pale Morning Dun) hatches are on the verge of starting — by early July expect excellent PMD activity; for now, fish a Parachute Adams in #16–#18 as a PMD imitation when you see risers.
Subsurface, lead with a Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–#18) or Copper John (#14–#16) to cover feeding fish in the deeper, slower channels. With off-color water, use slightly heavier tippet (4X is fine) and don't be afraid to add a small Woolly Bugger on a dropper to attract attention through the stained water.
Timing & Strategy
Given the elevated, slightly turbid flows, focus on eddies, inside bends, and any slow-water pockets near the bank. Fish will be pushed out of the fast main current. The midday midge hatch (10 AM–2 PM) is your best bet for consistent dry fly action. Two-fly nymph rigs with a small attractor bead-head up top and a small midge or nymph below is a reliable strategy.
Best Access Points
- Crooked River Ranch area (Hwy 97 corridor) — multiple pull-outs with foot access; use caution at high water
- Lower Crooked River State Wayside (near Terrebonne) — easy public access, good for wade fishing in slower sections
- Smith Rock State Park lower reach — scenic, popular, fish the calmer water below the park boundary
