- Copper John (#14–18, red or chartreuse) — extra weight gets your flies into the feeding zone when flows push fast; pairs well with a Zebra Midge dropper

Best Access Points
Bowman Dam to Crooked River Ranch: This is the heart of the catch-and-release fly fishing water. Pull off at Ogden Wayside State Park near Terrebonne for easy river access to the lower canyon section. The Crooked River Ranch area provides private-land access — check signage and stay on BLM ground.
Smith Rock State Park: The river corridor through Smith Rock offers both scenic wade fishing and a good indicator of clarity. The trail follows the river closely, giving anglers a preview of conditions before committing to a stretch.

The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is catch-and-release, artificial lures/flies only for rainbow trout. This is strictly enforced — check current ODFW regulations before your trip. Whitefish may be kept under separate limits.
