The Crooked River tailwater below Bowman Dam is delivering some of the best dry-fly fishing in Central Oregon right now. The cold, clear dam-release water keeps temperatures in the mid-50s even as the high desert bakes around it — a trout paradise when the rest of the region heats up. The prime 8–10-mile stretch from Bowman Dam down through Chimney Rock and into the Crooked River Ranch canyon is fishing beautifully, with consistent hatches morning and evening.

🌄 Morning Hatch Window (9 AM – Noon)

Expect a mixed hatch of Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) and Caddis beginning around 10 AM and running through midday. The PMD hatch on the Crooked rewards the angler who slows down and matches the hatch closely — fish can get selective. Go smaller than you think: a Parachute Adams in size 16–18 is a reliable starting point, and a Pheasant Tail Nymph in size 16–18 is the workhorse subsurface pattern for PMD nymphs drifting in the film. Switch flies often — on the Crooked, no single pattern dominates all day.

☀️ Afternoon Session (2 PM – Evening)

Caddis action picks back up in the early afternoon and continues into the evening. An Elk Hair Caddis in tan or olive (sizes 16–18) is the go-to dry. A Copper John in red or green (size 16–18) works well as a dropper off a dry, covering fish feeding just below the surface on emerging pupae. For anglers who prefer to nymph, fish a Zebra Midge (black/silver, size 20–22) tight to the bottom in the deeper slots — midges are always on the menu in this tailwater. A small Woolly Bugger (olive or black, size 10) swung through deeper pools and undercut banks will tempt the bigger browns and rainbows that rarely see a dry fly.

🎣 Top Access Points

• Chimney Rock: Drive 12 miles south of Prineville on OR-27; walk-in access to prime riffles and pools in the Wild & Scenic segment
• Big Bend Campground: Good wade access — note that late-season spawners have been reported near the top of Big Bend; please avoid disturbing fish on redds
• Lower Canyon / Crooked River Ranch: From Terrebonne, head north on US-97 then follow signs; excellent canyon access with less pressure than upper reaches

⚠️ Conditions & Hazards

The tailwater section below Bowman Dam runs clear year-round and flows are dam-regulated. Flow readings from the downstream gauge near Culver (USGS 14087400) reflect the full drainage including Opal Springs inputs. The prime upper tailwater fishing section typically runs at a lower, more wading-friendly level. All catch-and-release for trout in the Wild & Scenic segment — single barbless hooks required. No current closures reported.
