Crooked River Fishing Report – July 4, 2026
🎇 Happy Fourth of July! The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is one of Central Oregon’s most consistent tailwater fisheries, and today is no exception — cold, clear-ish water and willing trout await anglers willing to make the trip out to the Crooked River Ranch and Terrebonne corridor.
Current Conditions
USGS gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver) is recording 1,240 cfs as of 6:00 AM PDT — elevated for this stretch, reflecting higher releases from the Bowman Dam system and the contribution of Opal Springs. Water temperature is an excellent 55°F (13°C), providing ideal holding conditions for the rainbow and brown trout that populate this tailwater. Cold dam-release water keeps this river fishing productively even during peak summer heat when other Central Oregon streams struggle.
Water clarity is slightly off-color due to elevated flows, with visibility in the 3–4 foot range. Fish are stacked in current seams and along softer edges. Wading anglers should exercise caution — higher flows make footing tricky on the Crooked’s slick basalt cobble. Felt-soled boots or cleats are strongly recommended. The Fly & Field Outfitters report that “water conditions remain favorable” with “consistent” angler success, and Confluence Fly Shop notes sporadic caddis hatches with midges active throughout the day.
Hatches & What’s Working
Midges are the bread and butter of the Crooked River year-round, and today is no different. Expect midge clusters in calm back-eddies throughout the morning. Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) are beginning to show on warm afternoons — watch for rising fish in slower slicks between 11 AM and 2 PM. Sporadic caddis are also on the water, particularly in the evening hours. The cold water temps (55°F) keep fish active and feeding all day without the heat-stress shutdowns common on warmer rivers in July.
Top nymph patterns: A Zebra Midge (size 20–22, red or black) under an indicator is the go-to searching pattern and accounts for a huge percentage of fish on the Crooked. Drop a Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 16–18) off a Copper John for a two-fly rig that covers both midge and mayfly feeders. At higher flows, add weight and go deeper than you think you need to.
Top dry flies (afternoon/evening): When PMDs are popping, a Parachute Adams (size 16–18) or Elk Hair Caddis (size 14–16) fished in the slow water along the edges will draw strikes from actively rising fish.
Access Points & Hazards
The Crooked River Ranch area provides excellent wade access along the canyon rim trail system — multiple pull-outs along NW Lower Bridge Road give entry to productive runs. The Chimney Rock Trailhead (BLM) offers access to one of the most scenic and productive stretches of the lower river. The area just below Bowman Dam (via NW 11th Street in Terrebonne) is productive for nymphing the tailout.
Important: Open campfire restrictions are in effect on BLM lands along the Crooked River from June 1 through October 15 — no campfires allowed. Additionally, be aware that the Crooked River is catch-and-release only for trout in most sections — check current ODFW regulations before you go. Watch your step on elevated flows; the basalt substrate becomes extremely slippery.
💡 Pro tip for today: Start your day with a two-fly nymph rig (Copper John + Zebra Midge), then switch to dry flies when you see rises during the midday PMD window. The canyon walls provide shade in the morning and evening — fish love these shadowed edges, and so do healthy hatches.
