The Crooked River tailwater below Bowman Dam is one of Central Oregon's most reliable summer fly fishing destinations — and right now, it's delivering. Crystal-clear, cold water and consistent releases from Prineville Reservoir make this one of the best bets in the region when other rivers are blown out or warming up. This 4th of July weekend is a great time to give the Crooked a look.

Note: The downstream USGS gauge captures combined flow from the full drainage. Flows in the prime fly fishing section between Bowman Dam and the Terrebonne/Crooked River Ranch area are controlled by dam releases and typically run lower — conditions in that stretch are consistent and wade-friendly. Water temperature of 55°F is perfect for active trout feeding throughout the day.
Hatches & What's Happening
July on the Crooked means the hatch calendar is stacking up nicely. Recent reports from local fly shops confirm:
- Midges (size 20–24): Present all day, every day — the Crooked's bread and butter. Especially productive in early morning and late evening.
- PMDs (Pale Morning Duns, size 16–18): PMDs are now showing with regularity. Morning hatches are the best window, with spinner falls through mid-morning.
- Caddis (tan/olive, size 14–16): Sporadic caddis hatches are picking up as summer heat builds. Evening is prime time.
- Stoneflies: ODFW and local anglers are reporting stonefly and salmonfly activity near Crooked River Ranch — worth having a big dry in your box.
Top Fly Recommendations

- 🪰 Zebra Midge (red or black, size 20–22): The single most productive pattern on the Crooked. Fish it under a small indicator in the slower runs.
- 🪰 Pheasant Tail Nymph (size 16–18): Deadly for PMD nymphing and general searching. Weighted versions in the faster seams.
- 🪰 Parachute Adams (size 16–18): Versatile match for PMDs and BWOs during the morning window.
- 🪰 Copper John (red, size 16–18): Gets down in the faster runs; great dropper option paired with a midge adult on top.
- 🪰 Elk Hair Caddis (tan, size 14–16): As caddis flights increase through the afternoon and evening, this is your go-to dry.

Best Access Points
- Below Bowman Dam: The uppermost section holds excellent fish in cold, clear runs directly below the dam. Access via NW Reservoir Road off Hwy 27.
- Crooked River Ranch area: Multiple pullouts with easy walk-in access to some of the most productive canyon stretches. Fish the riffles, runs, and deep pools throughout the canyon.
- Smith Rock State Park vicinity: The lower reach near Terrebonne and Smith Rock offers scenic canyon water with excellent trout populations. Day-use parking is available.
- BLM Lower Canyon access: Several BLM pullouts along Hwy 27 between Prineville and Terrebonne offer wade access to productive water.
Hazards & Notes
- Fire Restrictions: BLM campfire restrictions are in effect June 1 – October 15 in the Lower Crooked River segment. No open fires.
- Rattlesnakes: High desert environment in July — watch your step when clambering over rocks and wading through bankside vegetation.
- Heat: July afternoons in the Crooked River canyon can be brutal. Start early, fish hard until noon, and rest during peak heat (1–4 PM). The evening window can be excellent if you can wait it out.
- Regulations: No harvest of rainbow trout over 20 inches. Check your current ODFW regulations. A valid Oregon fishing license is required.
