Current Conditions

The Crooked River tailwater is delivering outstanding summer fishing, and this weekend looks no different. USGS gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver) reports flows at 1,270 CFS this morning — note that this reading reflects the substantial contribution of Opal Springs, a major cold-water spring complex located downstream of the prime fishing corridor. Anglers targeting the upper 8–12 miles directly below Bowman Dam will find more manageable wading flows in that tailwater reach. Water temperatures are a stellar 56°F (13.2°C) — near-ideal for the wild redband rainbows and mountain whitefish that make this Wild and Scenic stretch famous. Unlike the lower Deschutes, summer heat is not a factor here; these fish are comfortable, active, and feeding.

Hatches

Caddis have taken over as the dominant hatch on the Crooked, and the fishing has been exceptional as a result. Expect a morning window starting around 9–10 AM with a mixed caddis and Pale Morning Dun (PMD) hatch, trailing off around noon. A second, primarily caddis-driven flight typically picks back up around 2 PM and continues through evening. On the Crooked, adaptability is key — it’s rare to fish a single pattern all day with consistent success. Midges remain active throughout the day, especially in slower, deeper pools, and represent a reliable subsurface option when surface activity pauses.

Top Fly Recommendations

Dry Flies:

• Elk Hair Caddis (#14–18, tan or black) — Essential for both morning and evening caddis hatches. Carry a range of sizes and colors to match the naturals as they shift.
• Parachute Adams (#16–18) — Excellent during PMD activity and mixed-hatch windows when fish are rising to multiple patterns at once.

Nymphs & Streamers:

• Zebra Midge (#18–22, black/red or black/silver) — The year-round workhorse on this tailwater. Dead-drift it through pools and runs all day; don’t leave the car without a box full.
• Pheasant Tail Nymph (#16–18) — Mimics caddis and PMD larvae effectively; fish it on a tight-line or indicator rig through deeper slots.
• Copper John (#14–16, red or green) — Gets down fast in the faster runs and pocket water; a reliable attractor nymph when fish aren’t keyed on a specific pattern.
• Woolly Bugger (#8–10, olive or black) — Swing it through the deeper bends and pools for the largest fish in the system. The Crooked holds some genuinely big redbands and this is how you find them.

Best Access Points

The prime tailwater section runs approximately 8–12 miles below Bowman Dam (Prineville Reservoir) along Highway 27. Key access includes the Bowman Dam parking area at the top, multiple pull-outs along the canyon road, and Lone Pine Bridge near mile 12. The Crooked River Ranch area offers camping and additional wade access with a more gradual river gradient that’s ideal for newer waders. Parking areas along Hwy 27 fill fast on summer weekends — aim for a 7 AM arrival to secure your spot.

Hazards & Regulations

Artificial flies and lures only throughout the tailwater section. All wild fish are catch-and-release; this is a self-sustaining wild population and it must stay that way. The canyon can get surprisingly warm by afternoon despite the cool water — bring water and sun protection. Rattlesnakes are present on canyon slopes and rocky banks; tread carefully when moving through vegetation or scrambling to access water. Footing can be slippery on the algae-coated basalt bottom — felt-soled wading boots or cleats are strongly recommended.
