The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is running on the higher side today, with USGS gauge data (gauge #14087400, below Opal Springs near Culver) recording 1,110 cfs and water temperature at a very comfortable 55°F (13.0°C). While the elevated flow from managed irrigation-season releases makes wading more challenging than typical summer conditions, the dam-controlled tailwater is holding crystal clear — and fish are active at these ideal temperatures.
Current Conditions
At 1,110 cfs, the Crooked is running higher than its typical summer baseline. Wading anglers should exercise caution, focus on shallower near-bank water, and avoid deep crossing attempts in the main channel. The good news: being a dam-controlled tailwater, clarity is unaffected by the elevated flow — you're looking right at the fish. Water temperature at 55°F is textbook prime trout territory; expect fish to be feeding aggressively throughout the day, not just during hatch windows. This is the Crooked's biggest advantage over the Deschutes in July — you don't have to wait for evening.
What's Hatching
The Crooked in July is a nymph and midge fishery first, with dry-fly opportunities throughout the day. Pale Morning Duns (PMDs) are hatching in the mornings, creating solid dry-fly opportunities in the flats and slower runs near the canyon walls. Caddis are emerging in the afternoons and evenings — not as explosive as the Deschutes caddis, but consistent enough to pull fish up. The real show, as always on this tailwater, is the perpetual midge activity. Zebra Midges and similar patterns produce fish all day long, especially in the upper section closest to Bowman Dam where the water is deepest and coldest. Terrestrials (ants, beetles) can be very effective during midday along grassy undercut banks.
Top Fly Recommendations
- Zebra Midge (#18–22) — The undisputed king of the Crooked. Black thread body with silver wire rib and a small bead head. Fish it on a long, fine tippet (5X–6X) under an indicator or tight-line style. Goes all day.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph (#14–18) — Outstanding PMD nymph imitation. Fish the bead-head version in faster runs; unweighted in slower, shallower flats.
- Copper John (#14–18) — Excellent attractor nymph in the Crooked's gin-clear water. Use a natural or red version as your anchor fly in a two-nymph rig.
- Parachute Adams (#14–18) — Best all-purpose dry fly for the PMD and caddis windows. Carry in multiple sizes.
- Elk Hair Caddis (#14–16) — Evening caddis dry fly. Fish the tailouts and slower current edges as light fades.
- Woolly Bugger (#8–12, olive or black) — Streamers can produce outsized fish when swung through deeper slots and undercut banks, especially at higher flows like today's. A great option when you want a change of pace from nymphing.
Best Access Points
- Bowman Dam Parking Area — Top of the tailwater section. The first mile below the dam holds heavy concentrations of fish and is a midge and PMD paradise. Short walk to excellent water.
- Lower Crooked River Recreation Area (BLM) — Multiple pullouts along Lower River Road (off US-97 near Terrebonne) provide access to the middle and lower stretches. Look for the BLM brown signs heading north from Terrebonne.
- Crooked River Ranch Access — Private property borders much of the upper reach; stay on BLM-designated public access points and respect all posted private land boundaries.
- Mile Marker 8–12 Stretch — The prime public-access zone. This 4-mile section along Lower River Road offers the best combination of fish density and wade-fishing access.
Hazards & Important Notes
⚠️ Elevated flows today at 1,110 cfs — use extra caution wading, especially in the main channel and deeper slots. A wading staff is strongly recommended. The Crooked canyon can be slick on algae-covered basalt — felt soles or rubber with studs are ideal. Rattlesnakes are present in the canyon — step carefully on rocky ledges and cliff bases. Thermal stress is not a concern today given the 55°F water temp, but always use barbless hooks for quick releases. The Crooked is a year-round fishery — check current ODFW regulations for any seasonal closures or bait restrictions. This tailwater is catch-and-release only for wild rainbows in most sections.
