Current Conditions
The Crooked River below Bowman Dam is running high and spirited this week, but don't let that keep you off the water — the Mother's Day Caddis hatch is in full swing and fish are keying in hard on caddis in all forms. With some adjustments in approach and fly selection, anglers who put in the effort are finding excellent action in the right water types.
Flow & Water Conditions
USGS gauge 14087400 (Crooked River below Opal Springs, near Culver) is reading 1,210 cfs as of this morning — significantly elevated above seasonal norms due to ongoing snowmelt contribution. Water temperature is a healthy 55°F (12.8°C), excellent for trout metabolism and actively feeding fish. Water clarity is off-color at these flows; focus on slower edge water, tailouts of pools, and any back-channel structure where fish can rest out of the main current and still intercept food.
Active Hatches
- Mother's Day Caddis (Brachycentrus) — #14–16: PEAK. This is the marquee event on the Crooked right now. Look for fish rising to adults in the afternoons, with sub-surface action throughout the day. Patterns with a chartreuse/bright green egg sac are the clear standout.
- Tan/Olive Caddis — #14–16: Dense numbers in the air. The afternoon surface film action is exceptional when flows allow fish to hold comfortably.
- Zebra Midges — #18–22: The year-round backbone of the Crooked. Fish always respond to a well-presented midge, especially in off-color conditions when they drop back to slower water.
- Blue-Winged Olive (Baetis) — #18–20: Still active on overcast mornings. An important secondary pattern.
Top Fly Recommendations
In elevated, off-color conditions, go sub-surface first and keep an eye out for any softening of the surface in the afternoons when caddis action can pop off.
- Elk Hair Caddis (olive/tan) #14–16 — The go-to dry for the Mother's Day Caddis hatch. Fish it in slower tailouts and edge water when you see adults on the surface.
- Pheasant Tail Nymph #16–18 — A killer subsurface presentation dead-drifted through soft seams. Matches emerging caddis and mayfly nymphs equally well.
- Zebra Midge #18–20 — Never leave home without these on the Crooked. Black or red bead-head versions fished on a tight line in the slower softer water are deadly year-round.
- Parachute Adams #14–16 — Versatile all-purpose dry for any riser you can find tucked into calmer edge water.
- Woolly Bugger (olive/black) #8–10 — High flows call for something bold. Swinging a bugger through deeper holding water can produce big hookups on fish that won't chase small flies in fast current.
- Copper John #16 — Sink it fast in the faster water and dead-drift through the bottom of every run. A reliable attractor nymph when visibility is reduced.
Best Access Points
The Crooked River Ranch area off Chinook Drive provides the most popular wade access in the lower canyon. The BLM river trail off NW Lower Bridge Way near Terrebonne gives good walk-in access to multiple quality runs. At elevated flows, prioritize access points where you can fish the bank and edge water without committing to a full-river crossing. The Ogden Wayside day-use area is a reliable launch point.
